Mesto dosáhlo vetšího rozmachu po reformách Marie Terezie a Josefa II. Bystrice se stala jednou ze trí nejduležitejších oblastí výroby sukna na Morave. Rozvoj byl však postaven pouze na rucní soukenické výrobe – bylo zde 230 soukenických mistru (1834). Velký požár 18.zárí 1841, kdy shorelo 116 domu, 60 plných stodol, radnice a kostel a následný rozvoj tovární výroby jinde privodil hluboký úpadek mesta a postupný úbytek obyvatel.
