St. Laurentius in Essen-Steele is a three-aisled basilica built in the years 1871-1873. The dominant architectural style is New Gothic. The architect was August Rincklake (* 15. Februar 1843 in Münster (Westfalen); † 19. August 1915 in Berlin).
Laying of the foundation stone took place on 6/26/1870 and the consecration by Paulus Melchers on 5/20/1875.
St. Laurentius is a monument since 6/8/1989.
On top of the crossing tower there is a beautiful crown that reminds of a visit of Kaiser Otto I in the year 938.

There are four clocks on each side of the bell tower. The face of the clock is of blue colour and the dial and hands are golden.
