The Derek Walcott Square features a huge Saman tree said to be over 400 years old. It has survived fires and hurricanes and is locally known as "massav tree".
Rumour has it one day, many years ago, a tourist asked a passing local what the name of the tree was. The St Lucian answered, " massav." Word spread and soon it was known as the Massav Tree. A special notice stating this hangs from the tree. "Massav" in the St Lucian Kwéyòl language means "I don't know."
