Einer der Hauptgründe für die Wahl des Standortes Mauthausen für ein Konzentrationslager war der Steinbruch.

Zwei Gedenktafeln an einem großen Stein erinnern an diese Zeit.

Der Steinbruch „Wiener Graben“, ursprünglich im Besitz der Stadt Wien, wurde von der SS zuerst im April 1938 angepachtet und im August desselben Jahres schließlich endgültig von der SS-eigenen Firma „Deutsche Erde- und Steinwerke GmbH“ (DEST) übernommen. Er war einer der Hauptgründe für die Wahl Mauthausens als Standort für ein Konzentrationslager. Ausschlaggebend war außerdem die Nähe zur Stadt Linz, für deren Ausbauprogramm der Granit aus dem Steinbruch Verwendung finden sollte.
Bis ins Jahr 1943 wurde der Großteil der Häftlinge des KZ Mauthausen zur Arbeit im Steinbruch eingesetzt. Unter Außerachtlassung der primitivsten Sicherheitsvorkehrungen wurde hier mit größter Brutalität das höchstmögliche Arbeitspensum aus den Häftlingen herausgepresst. Viele Häftlinge – besonders auch Angehörige der sogenannten „Strafkompanie“, die als Steinträger eingesetzt wurden – wurden hier gezielt durch Arbeit getötet.
Ab Herbst 1943 wurde der Arbeitseinsatz in den Steinbrüchen der DEST, so auch im Wiener Graben, zu Gunsten des Einsatzes von Häftlingen für die Rüstungsindustrie gedrosselt. Seit spätestens Frühjahr 1944 befanden sich im Steinbruch „Wiener Graben“ auch Produktionsstätten für die Fertigung von Flugzeugbauteilen der Firma Messerschmitt.
Anfang 1945 wurden auf dem Gelände des Steinbruchs Baracken zur Unterbringung weiblicher Häftlinge des Konzentrationslagers errichtet.

One of the main reasons for the choice of location for the Mauthausen concentration camp was the quarry.
