The Midland Railway Workshop Fallen Soldiers Memorial commemorates the seventy railway workers who enlisted from the workshops and died in World War One was erected through voluntary contributions from the Workshop staff . The figure on the memorial was sculpted by Pietro Porcelli and the bronze casting was executed in Italy.
The names of more than twenty-five men who lost their lives in World War Two were added later .

An inscription on the front reads :-

GREAT WAR 1914-1918
