This compass rose would have helped spotters determine the direction and course of enemy ships that might have needed to be blown out of the water by this fort's frightening 18 tonne 10 inch rifled muzzle-loading artillery.
When an enemy ship was sighted, a spotter at the compass rose would use it to call out the direction of fire, and help the gunners determine the angle of fire and range as well. North is indicated on this rose by the longest ray, with the left and right rays as you face north being west and east respectively. Of course, south would be directly opposite from the longest ray. Letters were not used because of the fact that many of the men serving in the lower enlisted ranks of the army came from Britain's lowest, most poverty-stricken classes, and could not read.
