Sign is located along the Salal Hill Trail.

Marker Name: Getting a rise out of Yaquina Head
Marker Text: This part of the headland was once as much as 1,000 feet (300 m) lower than it is now.

It’s our fault
Lava formed this headland 14 million years ago. Long afterwards, this end of the headland was thrust upward while the eastern side stayed in place. The joint between these two sides is called a fault.

Breccia and basalt
In the upper quarry, look west (toward the lighthouse and the sea) to see steep walls of breccia exposed by quarrying.
This type of rock, which lies under this side of Salal Hill, was created when lava hit the ocean. A violent mix of boiling water, lava, sand and sediment eventually cooled into breccia.
In Quarry Cove, you can see columns of crystalline basalt on the east side of the fault.
