As described by the National Geodetic Survey in 1978 (and its subsequent update in 2005):
"1.1 MI NORTH FROM WALLER.
0.35 MILE SOUTHEAST ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 290 FROM THE JUNCTION OF ALLIANCE STREET AND U.S. HIGHWAY 290 IN WALLER, THENCE 0.05 MILE NORTH ALONG A PAVED ROAD, THENCE 0.05 MILE EAST ALONG MILLS ROAD, AND THENCE 0.65 MILE NORTH ALONG FIELDS STORE ROAD. MARK IS SET AT THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF A CHAIN LINK FENCE SURROUNDING THE FOOTBALL FIELD FOR WALLER HIGH SCHOOL, 127.5 FEET WEST OF THE CENTERLINE OF FIELDS STORE ROAD, 27.5 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF BRAZEAL STREET, AND 1 FOOT EAST OF THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE FENCE. DISK IS SET LEVEL WITH THE GROUND, ACCESS TO WHICH IS TO BE HAD THROUGH A 4 INCH PLASTIC SCREW PLUG.
(2005) RECOVERY NOTE BY GEOCACHING -- '0.5 FEET EAST OF METAL WITNESS POST"
The NGS description and associated reference points (i.e. distances/directions) are a good starting point for locating this station, however please note the following updates (as of the last recovery by a fellow geocacher back in 2007):
* US Hwy 290 is now just .15mi North of here, the highway being referenced by the original description is now called "Old Hempstead Hwy", or "US Hwy BUS-290"... It is probably MUCH easier to just start from [the new] US Hwy 290, exit Fields Store Rd, then drive .13 mile SOUTH along Fields Store Road and arrive at the aforementioned "football field".
* Waller High School's football field has moved. The referenced sports field (and related chain link fence) STILL exist, however it is being used for other sports activities at this time. It is now called "Waller Auxiliary Stadium".
* The 4" screw plug is missing. Also, one may have to dig out several inches of dirt/mud before reaching to the actual disk.
(See posted waymark's gallery images for BM close-up and setting details... some of these pictures are now also posted on the
NGS website itself).
The most recently posted NGS Data Sheet's coordinates seemed to match perfectly with my own personal observations: it states "N 30 03 59.0 W 095 55 19.2", which was in line with my findings as measured with 10' accuracy and 10+ reading averages: "N 30° 03.983 W 095° 55.320".
