1861 the foundation of the "Evangelisch-Lutherische" community in Essen took place.
1909-1910 the church was built by the German architect Otto Bartning (* 12. April 1883 in Karlsruhe; † 20. Februar 1959 in Darmstadt).
1945 the building was totally destroyed.
After World War II this was the first church in Essen that was rebuilt in 1948.
