Inside an artillery fort seems like an odd place to display an anchor, however this anchor is dramatically connected to this place.
In 1864 the Civil War battle of Mobile Bay was fought right outside of Fort Gaines between Union Naval Forces and the Confederates who held this fort. A shell from a Union gunboat made an imprint in the walls of the fort that is still visible today.
This anchor came from the USS Hartford, flagship of U.S. Navy Adm. David Farragut, who was in command of naval forces at the Battle of Mobile Bay. Adm. Farragut is one of our greatest naval heroes, and Blasterz were very glad to see an artifact associated with him here.
A sign explaining the significance of this anchor reads as follows:
"ANCHOR FROM USS HARTFORD
This anchor came from the USS HARTFORD, Adm. Farragut's flagship during the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay in August of 1864. It was there that he uttered his now famous words. “Damn the torpedoes -- full speed ahead!”
