I recovered this U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey reference mark from 1948 in good condition. The triangulation station was found destroyed and the cement post uprooted and laying on its side with the disk missing. It's possible there's an underground mark to this station but I didn't attempt to look for it. The datasheet description from 1953 is INCORRECT. The description was most likely referring to Reference Mark 2 as being found destroyed. I didn't recover Reference Mark 3 but it's possible it's still there. No attempt was made at recovering the Azimuth Mark. The datasheet description has changed quite a bit over the years. Gale Road is now paved, there are no telephone poles on the west side of the road as mentioned in the description (they've been moved to the east side of the road) and the fence line has been moved east and much closer to the road and monumented marks.
The NGS datasheet info (updated info in red ) to recover this mark:
01/01/1948 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1948 (MTP) LOCATED ABOUT 6 MILES SOUTHEAST OF BONANZA, 1-1/2 MILES NORTHWEST OF MILLER CREEK, 1 MILE SOUTH OF LORELLA, ON THE NORTHEAST SIDE OF LOST RIVER IN LANGELL VALLEY AND ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE GALE ROAD. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN A CONCRETE CYLINDER PROJECTING 3 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE, 25 FEET WEST OF CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD AND 6 1 FEET EAST WEST OF A FENCELINE. IT IS STAMPED MILLER CR NO 1 1948.
My posted coordinates will place you very close to this reference mark.
