Today´s Colosseum Theater and the opposite IKEA car park are the only preserved factory buildings of the former Krupp-Stadt. These two buildings had been the entrance to the manufacturing facility for more than 12,000 workers at the turn of the century. Here, in the so called "VIII. Mechanische Werkstatt" they produced locomotives and crank shafts for ships.
The building was redisigned into a musical theatre from may 1995 to december 1996. The architects were Kohl & Kohl (today Kohl:Fromme Essen/Duisburg).
The premieres of the musicals "Elisabeth" and "Aida" took place in the Colosseum Theatre.
