AW2170 - "KATY 2" triangulation station disk - Katy, TX - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

As described by the National Geodetic Survey in 1974:

"THE STATION IS LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL PART OF THE CITY OF KATY, ON CITY PROPERTY, SOUTHEAST OF THE PROPOSED NEW MUNICIPAL BUILDING, ALONG THE NORTH SIDE OF SECOND STREET. THE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED KATY 2 1974, SET IN A ROUND CONCRETE MONUMENT FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. IT IS 150 FEET EAST OF THE CENTER OF AVENUE C, 38 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTER OF SECOND STREET, AND 9.5 FEET SOUTH OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE BUILDING WHICH SHALL BECOME THE CITY LIBRARY."

Save for the fact that the 2 "proposed" buildings are now in place (and that the "library" has now become the City Municipal Annex), the NGS description is pretty accurate and should definitely assist future seekers in finding this benchmark -- alternatively, one can use the gallery images for any future attempt at actual recovery.

The most recent associated NGS Data Sheet's coordinates are pretty accurate as well. As of the time of this posting, the BM can be a little tricky to find: some landscaping work -- specifically: decoration rocks -- have been placed right on top of the BM in question. Luckily, the rocks can be easily moved to the side temporarily in order to recover the actual bronze disk (see this waymark's gallery to get a clearer "picture" of the situation at hand).

Last but not least, please note that the NGS reports this benchmark as a "Triangulation Station Disk", but the disk in question was stamped as a "Horizontal Control Mark" (and yet includes the usual "triangle" found on Triangulation Station Disks). Although usually "U.S. Benchmarks" waymarks should be recorded as what is actually stamped on the disk (vs. what is being reported by the NGS Data Sheet), in this particular case the NGS Data Sheet clearly prevails.
