Érigée en église paroissiale par le duc Simon 1er au début du XIIe siècle. l'église Saint-Epvre n'a alors que les dimensions d'une chapelle. Ce sont les moines bénédictins du prieuré Notre-Dame qui la desservent. Un siècle plus tard, au début du XIIIe siècle, les villages de Laxou, Saint-Dizier (actuel faubourg des Trois-Maisons) et de Boudonville dépendent de cette paroisse. En 1436, l'édifice est totalement reconstruit, agrandi, et surmonté d'un clocher qui servait également de tour de guet ou de beffroi. En 1497, s'y installent les différents Conseils chargés des affaires municipales et, entre autres, celui appelé des "Quatre" de la ville. Au pied du clocher, se développait alors une place bordée d'arcades, sur laquelle se déroulaient quotidiennement les marchés (actuelle place Saint-Epvre). Dans le courant du XVIIe siècle, les échoppes des rôtisseurs qui étaient adossés au mur de l'église manquent d'ailleurs à plusieurs reprises d'y mettre le feu. Sous le Second Empire, un entreprenant prélat, Monseigneur Trouillet, conçoit un projet très ambitieux. Il rassemble des fonds considérables qui permettent à Prosper Morey d'édifier l'église de style néo-gothique toujours visible aujourd'hui. En 1874, Saint-Epvre est élevée au rang de Basilique mineure.

Erected in parish church by the Duke Simon first in the early twelfth century. St. Epvre while the church has a chapel dimensions. These are the Benedictine monks of the priory Notre Dame and serving. A century later, in the early thirteenth century, the villages of Laxou, Saint-Dizier (current suburb of Three Houses) and Boudonville depend on the parish. In 1436, the building was completely rebuilt, enlarged, and surmounted by a tower that also served as a watchtower or belfry. In 1497, settled there different Councils responsible for municipal affairs and, among others, the one called the "Four" of the city. At the foot of the tower, then developed a square surrounded by arcades, which took place on daily market (current place Saint-Epvre). In the course of the seventeenth century, the stalls of roasters who stood against the church wall lacking elsewhere several times to set it on fire. Under the Second Empire, an enterprising prelate, Monsignor Trouillet, designs a very ambitious project. It brings considerable funds that allow Prosper Morey to build the church in the Gothic Revival style still visible today. In 1874, Saint-Epvre (the actual church) is elevated to a minor basilica.
