Marigot local market is the biggest handicraft market in the Caribbean. It is very lively and full of odors and colors of the Caribbean.
The large and colorful statue was designed by local artist Martin Lynn and dedicated to the St Martin Market Women. It was sponsered by Janet & Gerald Carrus and reproduced by Teo Bonev. It shows a seated dark skin market woman with a basket of goods between her legs.
A plaque says:
"In memory of M. Martin Lynn / Designer / Feb. 12, 2006 / A&C"
Next to the statue, a poem called "The Market" by Ruby Bute (26-10-01) is written on another plaque. It starts with:
"Many souls, thousands ten thousands have trodden
Through my open-air gallery.
Fish, fowl and beast are my treats.
Selling, purchasing, the exchange of coins is like music to my ears.
I am the market in splendid beauty, color and sound.
I reign.
I am the market"
