In February of 1917 fire destroyed all but one building on the west side of the square. Located here had been a two-story stone building constructed soon after Daniel Howell, Elmore Allen and the Masonic Lodge #186 secured a deed to the property in 1859. Following the fire, attorneys T.J. McMurray and C.T. Gettys purchased the lot from then current owners, Tom Childress and wife of California. This building was completed and occupied before the end of 1917. The law firm of McMurray and Gettys occupied the upstairs front corner suite. Through the following years many attorneys occupied offices on the second floor, while the ground floor and basement served as the location of more offices and a variety of businesses.
