1937-1978 Escambia County Courthouse -- Pensacola FL - Courthouses on Waymarking.com

In the 1930s, the United States government and the Escambia County government both had the same problem: each had outgrown their respective buildings. So they mutually agreed to swap land so that each could have new quarters that would support their respective missions.

The US government got the 1890 Escambia County Courthouse land and built a new Federal Courthouse and Post Office on that parcel.

Escambia County got the gorgeous 1887 US Customs House & Post Office building at the corner of Palafox and government Street.

After renovations in 1937, the old customs house building served as the Escambia County Courthouse for several decades, until the county moved to a new ugly 1970s bunker-style/square condo-looking monstrosity in 1978.

Today (2014), the building, which is still owned by the County, is being renovated again: this time to restore its glory downstairs, and perhaps house local arts institutions upstairs. Source: (visit link)
