Katy's fire department was established in 1947 to service the then-small town of Katy, Texas. The city's population grew to ~14,500 by 2012, and now forms part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area.
Katy's first Fire Department building was erected in 1953. The firehouse moved 5 blocks North (to 1417 Avenue D) in the early 70's, but the original building has remained in public service over the years: it was re-purposed as the City Library in 1974, and is currently used as an Annex to the next-door City Municipal Complex housing most of the city's public services.
