This totem pole - as well as another beside it (WMNCZT) - were carved from the same tree, an 800-year-old Western red-cedar from the Nimpkish Valley and donated by the Kwakwaka'wakw people. Named "Connected Through Our Roots", it was carved by Kwagiulth artist Carey Newman and the 38 participants of the Eagle Project, a job skill training program.
The pole weaves together the images of a grandmother, a wild woman, a baby, and a warrior child, along with symbolic animals such as the frog, bear, and eagle. They are woven together in the hair of the grandmother - sitting at the top - whose locks become roots further down the pole.
The pole was raised in a ceremony on National Aboriginal Day on June 21, 2011 and is intended to represent the Coast Salish people.
