This plaque is dedicated to Right Wing of the Army of Tennessee, commanded by Lieut. Gen. Leonidas Polk in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 19, 1863. This is one of two monuments to the Right Wing on the battlefield.

To reach this monument:
Park on Alexander Bridge Road. A path runs east from near the plaques to Breckinridge’s Division (CSA) & 92nd Ohio (USA). Follow this path east. A path running north to Reed's Bridge Road will intersect this path at the Brig. Gen. Benjamin H. Heim headquarters monument. Continue pasted the monument along the same path, crossing a small creek to the monument.

Text on the plaque reads:
Right Wing – Army of Tennessee
Gen. Leonidas Polk.
Sept. 20, 1863

Forrest’s Cavalry Corps Brig. Gen. Nathan B. Forrest.
Breckinridge’s Division Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge.
Walker’s Reserve Corps Maj. Gen. Wm. H. T. Walker.
Cleburn’s Division Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburn.
Cheatham’s Division Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Cheatham.

Breckinridge’s division attacked the left of the Union line in position around the northeast corner of the Kelly field about 9:45 A.M. and after a severe engagement was repulsed with great loss. Walker’s corps was then brought forward. Cleburne’s division attacked the Union line east of the Kelly field at 10 o’clock and was repulsed with severe loss. Forrest’s Calvary moved forward when Breckinridge attacked, and captured the Union hospitals about Cloud’s house and spring, but was driven back by Gordon Granger’s troops, then on their way to Thomas, about 1 o’clock. A general attack on the right wing was ordered by General Bragg about the middle of the afternoon, but it was not delivered on this front until two Union divisions had withdrawn, and Johnson’s and Baird’s divisions were about to withdraw. Upon being attacked Johnson and Baird withdrew to the forest west of the Kelly field. The Confederates followed and bivouacked along the line of the Chattanooga and Lafayette road.

Note
Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
