Blasterz are impressed that the Hancock County folks who directed this World War II Memorial remembered the contributions not only of the Merchant Marine and Coast Guard but also of all the women's reserve units that were active during World War II. WACS, WAVES, SPARS, WASPS, and the Womens Marine Corps alleviated the burden on men to fill jobs that women could fill instead and supported the overall mission of the United States Armed Forces.
This is a very well executed, respectful and comprehensive WWII Memorial. Blasterz were very impressed.
The scope of the Memorial is set out right in front, before the hundreds of names on and the surrounding panels are listed. That part of the Memorial reads as follows:
"World War II officially began September 3, 1939 and ended September 2, 1945. The individuals listed here on either lived in or called Hancock County home during that period.
Included are members of the U.S. Army, Army air Corps, National Guard, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and or WAC (Women's Army Corps) WAVES (Women's Naval Reserves). Women's Marine Corps, SPARS (Women's Coast Guard Reserves), WASP (Women's Air Force Service Pilots), as well as U.S. Army and Navy Nurses Corps.
Gold stars indicate they lost their lives while serving.
POW designates Prisoners of War.
