This monument and the gateway to the south is dedicated to URI alumni who served in World War I.

In South Kingstown, along Upper College Road, is the World War Monument and Memorial Gateway.
The gateway is located on either side of the road, near the intersection with Briar Lane. Parking is limited in this region, so watch for signs.
The World War I monument and memorial is both the stone gateway and a rock with a plaque attached on the west side of the road a few feet north of the gateway.
The gateway is a two part stone archway where people walk through on the side walks. There is a plaque on the south side of the eastern gate with the following text:
"[Logo]
Presented by the alumni and students of Rhode Island State College
as a token of their loyalty to their alma mater.
Dedicated June 16, 1926
Rededicated June 16, 2008 on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary"
The boulder plaque has the following text:
"1916 [Logo] 1918
In honor of the three hundred thirty four men of Rhode Island State College who devoted themselves to the cause of freedom and served in the World War
In Memoriam
[Designs]
[Names]
Erected by
Rhode Island State College Alumni Association
June 1922"
The link provided relates the rededication ceremony, which has more information. At the time of the war, the enrollment at the state college (now the University of Rhode Island) was 563, while those who went to war from the college was 334. Of those, 23 lost their lives in the war.
