William D. Carroll was born on Christmas Day, 25 December 1862, during the US Civil War. He passed away about 102 and a quarter years later on 18 March 1965. His FindAGrave entry has no further biographical information on him.

The year that William was born, the Gatling Gun was invented; and the major Civil War battles of Shiloh, Second Bull Run (or Manassas), and Antietam (or Sharpsburg) were fought. The year that William died, Rangers 2 and 3 took photographs of the moon for possible landing sites, and Cosmonaut Leonov was the first person to walk in space.
