WORLD WAR I (1914-1918)
(The War to End all Wars)
The United States reluctantly entered the European Conflict in 1917, after German subs sand U.S. ships crossing the Atlantic. A draft was used to build up the U.S. forces who were to fight in 14 major battles on the Western Front allied with the French and British. New weapons were used for the first time such as aircraft, armored tanks and long range artillery. Germany used poison gas. Trench warfare with intense fighting occurred until an Armistice was agreed to. President Wilson declared that the world must be made safe for democracy. He lead a futile attempt to get the U.S. to join the League of nations. U.S. had 320,518 causalities with 116,516 war deaths.
