The decisive Battle of New Orleans was fought here on 8 Jab 1815 by regular US Army, Navy, and Marine Corps forces, supplemented by various state volunteer militias and even a band of Choctaw militiamen. These forces were under the command of Gen. Andrew Jackson, who would later become President of the United States.

Gen. Jackson's troops defeated the British, saved New Orleans from capture, and scored the decisive victory of the war.

The cenotaph was built to recognize the service and sacrifice of all of those who fought and died at the Battle of New Orleans. It was monument it as an NGS benchmark in the 1870s.
