The cemetery was opened by Hoyland Nether Urban District Council in 1935. Chapel is situated along the driveway from the main gate situated from Kirk Balk. This is used for all vehicle access to the cemetery. There is a small footpath gate further along Kirk Balk, and a small footpath gate situated on Hawshaw Lane. The BMBC web site lists this gate as the address of the cemetery.
Cemetery was taken over by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in 1974
Inside the chapel are racks around the walls with wooden drawers holding cremation ashes. At the present, due to vandalism, the gate to the chapel is locked with keys given to relatives. In earlier times the chapel was open with a memorial book on display with the day page turned daily. There is now a large plot outside where ashes can be buried under paving stones with small rectangular headstones.
