Lucy Mabel Culley was born in Costessey, Norfolk in 1880. She studied art at the Slade Art School from 1898 to 1901. Following art school she became a teacher at Sherborne and Berkhamsted. By 1932 she had joined her sister Ruth, in Stevenage, where Ruth ran Westover School.

During her time in Stevenage Mabel Culley established a reputation for her fine drawings and paintings of local scenes. Mabel agreed to illustrate a book on Stevenage, to be written by the renowned local historian Reginald Hine. Tragically, Hine died in 1949 before the book could be written. Mabel published the drawings in the 1950s as the Stevenage Picture Book. She died in 1965. For further details see the excellent article by V Richards in the web link.

The two drawings of Dyes Farm form part of that collection. The farm house has seen alteration since 1946. The today photo is taken closer to the building than the artist would have sat, due to enclosure of the adjoining fields.
