Located on the University of Oregon campus and west of Allen Hall and Friendly Hall is a dedicated tree with a nearby plaque that reads:

Magnolia soulangiana
(SAUCER MAGNOLIA)
PLANTED 2012 IN MEMORY OF
U of O Graduates

WILLIAM WESLEY PORTER 1923
ETHEL MURRAY PORTER 1921
MARY JEAN BENTSEN/(PORTER) 1970

The University prides itself in its large collection of trees on campus and has created an online tree atlas that visitors can follow in discovering where each tree exists. There's a part of the atlas that highlights the dedicated trees on campus and reads:

The map symbol of a circle or triangle with a dot in the center represents a tree that was donated to the university. Class trees, annual University Day plantings, memorials, and retirement commemorations are among these donations. From 1976 to 1983, a donation program known as “100 Years, 100 Trees” was organized and operated by the University Women’s Club in commemoration of Oregon’s 1976 centennial. This program added about 450 trees to campus, of which 326 survive today.

This particular tree was planted after the Atlas of Trees was published and does not appear in the document.

Location of the tree: University of Oregon, west of Allen / Friendly Hall

Type of tree: Saucer Magnolia
