This arena was built in the years 1956-1958 by the architect Ernst Friedrich Ludwig Brockmann (later Ernesto Frederico; * 26. September 1920 in Hannover; † 24. September 1978 in Bosco Luganese) and Gerd Lichtenhahn from Essen.
"Grugahalle is an indoor sports arena, located in Essen, Germany. Opened in 1958, the seating capacity of the arena is 5,309 people, for sporting events and 7,800, for concerts.
The arena hosted the latter stages of EuroBasket 1971 including the final in which the Soviet Union defeated Yugoslavia."

A lot of concerts took place in Grugahalle:
1959,1960 and 1961 Essener Jazztage with Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Oscar Pettiford, Kenny Clarke, Coleman Hawkins, the Dave Brubeck Quartet and the Quincy Jones Big Band.
1965 The Rolling Stones at that time with Brian Jones.
1966 Joan Baez, The Beatles!!! and The Beach Boys.
1968 Essener Songtage with The City Preachers, The Fugs, Julie Felix, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.
