První kostel byl v Policce postaven pravdepodobne krátce po založení mesta v roce 1265. Na jeho míste byl ve 14. století založen nový, v 17. století barokne upravený. Pri velkém požáru v Policce byl natolik poškozen, že bylo rozhodnuto o jeho stržení a stavbe nového kostela. Ten byl postaven v letech 1853-65 v novogotickém slohu podle plánu inženýra Antonína Vacha z Pardubic. Slavnostne vysvecen byl 30. cervence 1865. Ve veži kostela se 8. prosince 1890 narodil známý ceský hudební skladatel Bohuslav Martinu.
