Alemannische Bühne was originally founded as Elsässisches Theater in 1924 by a group of theater enthusiasts from Alsace-Lorraine living in Freiburg. Theater in local dialects were not common in Germany these days. All members of the group were amateurs, but over they years the stage became quite known. They played until the war forced them to stop this activity in 1941.
In 1951 it was re-founded, in the first years as a traveling theater. In 1978 the could move in the current location, a former brewery, that they have been playing since, with the exception of 1998 until 2000, when the rooms were renovated.
Apart from playing on their home stage, the ensemble still does some traveling around southern Germany.
