In South Kingstown, near the building that currently houses the South Kingstown Public Library, is this plaque in a stone marker about the activities of Rhode Island Legislature that met here.
The building is located on the northeast corner of the intersection of Rhode Island Route 138 and Upper College Road. Also at this intersection is a stone sign for the University of Rhode Island.
There is a sign and a plaque near the entrance to the building. The plaque states:
"Gen. George Washington
Gen. Horatio Gates, Col. John Trumbull, Lt. Col Tench Tilghman, Continental Troops
Stayed here in 'Little Rest'
March 5-6, 1781
On route to Newport to review the French Army and Fleet under Comte De Rochambeau and Adm. Destouches
'Generill Washington went Newport this Day, the town was Elluminated."
Diary of Thomas 'Nailer Tom' Hazard
May 8, 2004"
Little Rest was the name of the village until it was first called Kingston. Since then, the land that made up Kingston was split in two and the portion containing this village became the present day town of South Kingstown. For more information about the event, following the link provided below.
