This treadwheel crane is on display next to the main entrance of Augustinermuseum in the center of Freiburg.
It was created by students of the craft academy (Gewerbe-Akademie Freiburg) in 1.700 hours of manual work according to designs of the 15th century.
The crane has a height of 5.5 meters, and the wheel a diameter of 4 meters. It can lift about one metric ton. The crane is completely made of wood, fir and spruce, except for the axis that is made from oak wood.
This type of cranes was invented in Graeco-Roman times, but the fell into oblivion. The system was re-discovered in the late Middle Ages, without them the great Gothic cathedrals would not have been possible. The nearby cathedral of Freiburg still today has three of them inside the roof truss.
