EN: Herz-Jesu-Kirche (Sacred Heart Church) is located in Freiburg's Stühlinger district west of the main station. Construction began in June 1892, it was inaugurated on May 2, 1897.
The shape of the twin towers and the color of the church facade is reminiscent of the Limburg Cathedral. The architect Max Meckel, who was previously Dombaumeister (cathedral master builder) in Limburg, preferred the neo-Gothic style, but the specifications dictated a design in late Romanesque style, so as not to compete with the cathedral.
In bomb raids in November and December 1944 the church was badly damaged. After the war, it was repaired and consecrated again in 1952. But only after a laborious restoration 1997, the original condition has been largely restored.
Since 1984, Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a listed building.
DE: Die Herz-Jesu-Kirche befindet sich im Freiburger Stadtteil Stühlinger westlich des Hauptbahnhofs. Der Bau begann im Juni 1892, am 2. Mai 1897 wurde sie geweiht.
Durch die Form der Doppeltürme und die Farbgebug der Fassade errinnert die Kirche an den Limburger Dom. Der Architekt Max Meckel, der zuvor Dombaumeister in Limburg war, bevorzugte den Neugotischen Stil, aber die Vorgaben schrieben einen Entwurf im Stil der Spätromanik vor, um nicht in Konkurrenz zum Freiburger Münster zu treten.
Bei Bombenangriffen im November und Dezember 1944 wurde die Kirche stark beschädigt. Nach dem Krieg wurde sie wieder instand gesetzt und 1952 erneut geweiht. Aber erst bei einer aufwändigen Restauration 1997 wurde der ursprüngliche Zustand weitgehend wieder hergestellt.
Seit 1984 steht die Herz-Jesu-Kirche unter Denkmalschutz.
