The first person to live on the property was John T. Houston before the civil war. He left 25 acres stay natural and farmed around it. His grandson John D. Brumbaugh left the entire 109 acres to the University of Mount Union in 1986. The University established a nature preserve and in 1991 they built a visitor center and in 2001 a bird observatory. The center is handicapped accessible and has a boardwalk. There are also 3 miles of trails thru the wooded area.
