"Sewage spill closes La Jolla Children's Pool
By Deborah Sullivan Brennan5:12 P.M.OCT. 14, 2014
A sewage spill at Children’s Pool in La Jolla led to closure of the site early Tuesday morning.
Signs warning of the contamination are posted at Children’s Pool, South Casa Beach, and at other beach access points extending about 1,000 feet north and south of Children’s Pool, county officials announced Tuesday.
The signs will stay up until water samples show that the beach is safe for human contact.
The occurred around 5 a.m. Tuesday, when 5,000 gallons of sewage leaked from a blocked sewer line and flowed southwest down Coast Boulevard. It seeped into a storm drain that flows to Children’s Pool, contaminating the water quality at Children’s Pool and potentially affecting nearby areas of the coast.
Children’s Pool is home to a harbor seal rookery, and has been the site of frequent conflicts between environmentalists who want to preserve the beach for the seals, and swimmers and divers who support shared access to the site.
In August the California Coastal Commission approved a city ordinance that will close public access to the pool from Dec. 15 through May 15 annually, in order to protect mother seals and their pups."
