Matze (* 1957 in Zentralafrika; † 13.

Matze (* 1957 in Central Africa; † 13 August, 2008 Frankfurt am Main) was born in Central Africa and trapped there. After a period of wandering with showmen, Matze came on May 24, 1969, with an age of approximately 12 years, into the Frankfurt Zoological Garden. Here, the silverback became the leader of a group of four female gorillas, with whom he fathered a total of nineteen offspring. Matze was one of the symbols of the zoo and known far beyond Frankfurt.
In memory of Matze stands since November 2009 this bust by sculptor Wolfgang Weber close to the entrance of the ape house of the zoo.
