Algernon Cecil Newton was born in 1880, a grandson of the Windsor & Newton paint firm. He left Clare College Cambridge without graduating and studied art in London. He was invalided out of the army in 1916 and was reduced to selling his paintings on street corners. After about 1920 his pictures started to sell, and he was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts. He specialised in urban views and waterways, and established a reputation for painting portraits of country houses.
