Stanley Orchart, born in 1920, studied at Leeds School of Art and specialised in landscape painting in both oils and watercolour. He painted several commissions, the Queen Mother being a patron. His subject matter was largely in East Anglia, around his home in Great Staughton, Cambridgeshire.
The today photo is taken from the publicly accessible Barton Rd on Harlington Hill. The perspective of the painting indicates that the artist would have been inside the farmer’s field overlooking the farmhouse, some 20 metres or so from the road. There is no doubt that the area is correct, since the OS map indicates there is only one farm, Willow Farm, between Harlington and Sharpenhoe Clappers. The farm and the treescape has changed somewhat in the intervening years.
The painting, oil on canvas and dated 1951, is in the collection of Wardown Park Museum, Luton.
