The former church St Martin is located in the south of the historic center of Breisach.
The current building dates back to 1761, but it had predecessors. The hospital Heiliggeist, that was first mentioned in 1301 at another location, moved to this area of a former monastery in 1675. In 1761 the church was rebuilt in late rococo style ('Zopfstil').
In World War II, February 1945, most of the hospital buildings were completely destroyed. But the outer walls of the church had remained and it was rebuilt in 1966 to serve as a location for cultural events. The carillon in the ridge turret was added in 1990.
