In operation since 1869, the Hokitika Museum is a regional museum housed since 1998 in the historic Carnegie Building.

Audio-visuals provide a great introduction to the West Coast while exhibitions tell stories of pounamu, tangata whenua, the gold-rush, whitebaiting, the challenges of transport and the development of Westland. Don’t miss the giant Meccano model dredge or the quiz for kids.

The museum has a great collection of treasures and its photograph and archives collections are an important resource for historians and genealogists.
