"The National Forest of Buçaco (Bussaco in the old spelling) is a protected area located in the Serra do Buçaco, municipality of Mealhada. It was planted by the Order of the Discalced Carmelites in the first quarter of the seventeenth century, lying bounded by walls erected in order to limit access to forest.

The Carmelites also built around the Convent of Santa Cruz do Buçaco, designed to accommodate the monastic order, which existed between 1628 and 1834, the date of dissolution of the religious orders in Portugal.

In 1888 the construction of the Royal Palace (now Palace Hotel Buçaco) in the convent of the site was started, which is partially demolished for the purpose.

The National Forest of Buçaco has plant species from around the world imported by the Discalced Carmelite Order, including the famous Cedar of buçaco (Cupressus lusitanica)."
