Frankfurt am Main was in the 1950s the city with highest traffic volume in Germany. In 1956, a car park for 400 cars and 70 motorcycles with several shops on the ground floor and a gas station in front was built. The plans were from the architects Max Meid and Helmut Romeick.
Stretching within a length of 65 meters along the Kornmarkt, the reinforced concrete building is reflecting the graceful elegance of the 1950s. The parking spreads over four floors above ground and a basement, the ground floor is reserved shops and restaurants (except for the entry and exit area). The pre-hung vertically split clear glass façades of the four upper floors allow a generous view of the interior.
The gas station located in front of the parking garage was demolished in the 1970s. In 1986, the parking garage Hauptwache was added to the monument topography of the city of Frankfurt am Main. Mid-1990s, it was renovated and in 1993 the metal sculpture "Modulor" by Eberhard Fiebig was placed near the entrance.
