About the Area:
The Zwin is a nature reserve between Belgium and the Netherlands.
It was an estuary which was used by ships to sail to the open see from Brugge. The estuary originated due to a great flood in 1134. Brugge built a port in Damme. This port made it possible for Brugge to become one of the biggest tradecity of Europe. There is not much left of the original 6 kilometers wide estuary. It has been silted up during the last centuries. It is now a refugium for several birds. During spring-tide salt water floods in the reserve creating special conditions for several plants that like salty ground. It is advisable to bring your binoculars to the site.
