The plan for this monument was made by Hermann Fuchslocher (* 18. Juli 1889 in Esslingen; † 7. Mai 1964 in Gelsenkirchen,) Stadtbaumeister Wönckhaus and the architect Wilke. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on 7/26/1933 and the laying of the foundation stone followed on 8/20/1933.

The memorial is 18m high and it is built of 34,000 bricks and there are 2,500 fire-gilded names of the fallen troops of World War I.
The inscription says: "The victims of the wars urge for peace".
"Die Opfer der Kriege mahnen zum Frieden".
