Located near the Grants Pass Visitor Center on 6th Street is a mosaic piece titled
Places of Pride created by artist Karen Rycheck in 2012 as part of the 'History Underfoot' Public Art Sidewalk Mosaics project. Each of four mosaics located downtown shares these common characteristics: 31.5" in size; Each design contains an inner circle that touches the four sides of a brick border and includes brass compass points; Each mosaic features a caveperson hidden somewhere in the design. (Why a caveperson? See
here).
This particular mosaic contains history of Josephine County. From covered bridges to trestles to the Redwoods sign at the south end of town, there are many historic landmarks in Josephine County that remind citizens of their past and connect them to the history of the community.
Can you spot the caveperson in the mosaic? :)
