20th Wisconsin Infantry has this one marker on the Battlefield and it is in a grassy area in front of the Pemberton Plaza along Pemberton Square Boulevard.

The 20th Wisconsin was organized at Madison, Wisconsin and mustered into Federal service August 23, 1862. The regiment was mustered out on July 14, 1865 at Galveston, Texas.

The 20th Wisconsin suffered 5 officers and 100 enlisted men killed in action or who later died of their wounds, plus another 1 officer and 145 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 251 fatalities.

Short Significance Description:

The monument contributes to the national significance of the park under NR Criteria A because it represents the national movement among veterans and related groups to commemorate and mark major Civil War battlefields.

Short Physical Description9'6" x 9'6" x 11' high obelisk of polished red Montello, WI, granite on 2-step base of gray Barre, VT, granite. Shaft composed of 3 stones with raked joints. Pedestal has unit designation; campaign record in middle; WISCONSIN at top.
