Colosseum - Rome, Italy - Literary Sites on Waymarking.com

In John Dos Passos' novel "1919", a group of American friends who are working for the Red Cross during World War I are summoned from Venice to Rome. The night they arrive in Rome, and before discovering why they were summoned, they visit the Colosseum at midnight. The experience leaves "...Rome throbbing in their ears so that they could not sleep." The next morning, one of the men, reports to the Red Cross and learns that the organization had received troubling reports that the men had been expressing pacifist sentiments. The group then report to the main headquarters in Paris and take different paths from there.
