Jow Williams, the central character of the beginning of John Dos Passos' novel "1919" leads a rather itinerant life. After spending a second period working on a ship, he returns to Washington DC. He walks around the White House where he hopes to run into an old girlfriend. At one point, he decides to take a rest in Lafayette Square which is across the street from the White House's rear side.
"1919" is the 2nd book in Dos Passos' trilogy "USA".
