"Temple of Our Lady of Mercy
The Convent of Our Lady of Mercy was founded in 1629, when one room was converted into a chapel. Thanks to donations, the houses in the rest of the block were acquired to increase the convent and build the church., and it was in 1650 that the construction of what we know nowadays was begun. The chapel did not fall down, since it was located inside what was being built, and this is how it was possible to continue the religious cult. In 1721, the construction was finished. In 199, due to a fire, a great part of what was still remaining of the convent was lost.
It is worth noting the Baroque-style elements on the portico. On the frame of the half-point arch door, we find four grooved pilasters with Doric-style capitals and flowers in bas-relief above the arch and on the sill. On the upper part of the door there are three niches with quarry stone sculptures. The choir window has pilasters framing it, and it finishes on a triangular pediment.
The temple has a single aisle of Latin cross with short arms; it has three altars: The main one is an elegant altarpiece of Neoclassic style, and it lodges the image of Our Lady of Mercedes. The other two altars are located on the sides; the one on the West side is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, and the one on the East side is dedicated to the Holy Virgin in her Avocation of Guadalupe. It has four adjoining chapels which, in turn, have a connection to the street.
The vault is ornamented with twelve-petal flowers divided into five sections, including that of the octagonal cupola of the crossing., and this has four windows and a small tower, whose dome was covered with tiles in 1930."
